When Jenny was put on the morphine, and the first and definitive step towards Death was taken, it came as a shock to us. But while the shock was shared, the way each one of us chose to deal with it was different. Two of Jenny’s sons tried violently but unsuccessfully to revert the procedure. Jenny had to literally fight for her right to die. One of the strategies they used was provocation. While she was still conscious, they confronted her head on. Each time she gathered all her remaining strength to retaliate with a wave of anger. “Die kracht wil ik!(That’s the power I want),” rejoiced one of the sons, mistaking a spark for the eternal flame. Afterwards, I understood what it was all about. He had been dependent on her ‘power’ his entire life. He simply could not imagine a life without it. The extinction of her flame, meant the end of his own being as he knew it.
