Today is one month’s anniversary of Jenny’s passing. At Hofheide, the place where she was cremated, there is this huge statue of a woman lying on the ground with her hand around an oak tree. It’s monumental and peaceful at the same time. It draws you in and invites you to come closer. So, after the cremation, glass of white wine in hand, we took a leisurely walk to greet her. The artwork is by Wilfried De Cock and it’s entitled ‘Mother Earth’. It symbolizes the circle of life: we are of the earth and to the earth we return. The woman herself is composed of 12,000 thousand of tiny metal oak leaves and she is, at the time of writing, the largest female statue in Belgium. She is a testament of the power of art to heal and restore. After just having experienced someone go up in flames and now being in the presence of this majestic reclining serenity, what I wanted to do the most was to live.
